Certain residence permits can now be renewed online in France

The French government has made it easy for some residence permit card renewals in effect from 3 July 2024. The online dedicated portal will help foreign nationals file renewal requests through the official website “Foreign Nationals in France.” Applicants, who want to apply for permanent residence, can also apply via the same portal.

The new digitalized system will help non-EU nationals renew their 10-year duration residence permits for the following categories:

  • resident card with the words “Long-Term Resident-EU”;
  • resident card for foreign nationals who meet the conditions for obtaining French nationality;
  • residence permit for family reasons (family reunification, foreign national married to a French national, etc.);
  • residence certificate for Algerian nationals; and
  • resident card provided with bilateral agreements between France and Morocco, Tunisia, Burkina Faso, Benin, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Togo.

As Schengenvisa.news previously released an update about a tool that helps foreign nationals remind of their residence permit renewal, this new digitalization will help the country provide all possible ease to foreigners.

What is the residence permit renewal reminder tool?

France has launched a new online tool to help foreign nationals renew their residence permits. This proactive digital system sends automatic notifications to remind users about their permit expiration four months, two months, and one week in advance.

Non-EU nationals must renew their residence permits on time. If they apply after the permit has expired, they will have to pay a €180 fine. The ideal renewal window is within the four-month to two-month period before the expiration date.
