The EU has increased the Schengen visa fee from EUR 80 to EUR 90 for adults and for children aged 6 to 12 from EUR 40 to EUR 45 effective from 11 June 2024. The increase is based on a review that takes place after every three years. Inflation rates and salary developments for civil servants are the basic parameters EU-wide that help set the Schengen visa fee.

On 2 February 2024, the Schengen visa fee increase was announced by the EU Commission. The decision was announced due to the Europe-wide annual inflation rate and salary changes for civil and national workers in three years. Furthermore, the EU also asked for general feedback from 2 February to 1 March and the adaption date was set as 14 March 2024. Strong opposition has been seen from many organizations and Türkiye about the fee increase.
In 2020, the visa fee was first announced to be changed by the EU Commission from €60 to €80 for adult applicants.
The applicants for Schengen visas have to pay a fee to the embassy for visa processing alongside biometrics and visa application center fees. So according to this change, the whole cost could be overall EUR 150. Furthermore, the costs of tickets, insurance, travel, and hotel booking are separate from these expenses.
