Passport Ranking of EU Countries in 2026: Most Powerful European Passports

The sheer dominance of the EU countries’ passport ranking continues this year as well. This indeed highlights the strength of European passports in global mobility. Based on the latest April 2026 rankings, several European Union countries continue to dominate the list of the world’s most powerful passports due to their extensive visa-free travel access.

The rankings are determined by the number of destinations passport holders can visit without requiring a prior visa.

The latest ranking by Henley and Partners shows that Singapore holds the number one position in the world as the strongest passport. Its citizens have visa-free or simplified access to 192 destinations, covering approximately 85% of the world. Japan, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates share 2nd place with 187 countries’ access.

EU Countries Dominate

Starting from number three position of the global passport rankings, the dominance of EU countries starts. Sweden currently holds the strongest passport among EU countries, ranking 3rd globally with access to 186 destinations without a prior visa. This places Sweden among the most powerful passports in the world in terms of international travel freedom.

A large group of EU countries shares the 4th global position with visa-free access to 185 destinations. These include Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Their strong rankings reflect Europe’s continued influence in global travel mobility.

Austria, Greece, Malta, and Portugal closely follow in 5th place with access to 184 destinations, while Hungary and Poland rank 6th globally with 183 destinations.

Lower-Ranked EU Passports

Among EU member states, Cyprus ranks 13th globally with visa-free access to 174 destinations. Bulgaria and Romania share the 11th position globally with access to 177 destinations.

Although these countries rank lower compared to leading EU nations, their passports still provide strong international mobility compared to many non-European countries.
